Who told you…?

I know all of us have our responsibilities, but does that mean that we can’t lighten up and have some fun? Can’t we take life a little less seriously? (this coming from the mother of a critically handicap child) I mean really… do we have to be so serious all the time? Since when did becoming an adult mean having a pole shoved up our asses?
What if we embraced who we were before life got too serious? Wouldn’t that remedy 99% of the problems we have because we began taking ourselves too seriously? No, we started taking our lives too damn seriously because society has taught us that we’re worth nothing unless we attain to certain markers and accomplishments. I need tell you something about that though, it’s horseshit.
There is no such milestone or marker in life that awards you with the title; Successful. Success is in the eye of the beholder. Success is however you define it. In fact, the whole of your life is your definition so long as you silence the peanut gallery who is all too eager to have you feeling lowly. The need to follow any sort of ideals isn’t there for your benefit, it is there for the benefit of their pocketbook and power. Those who need you to spend your money on their products. Those who need you suckling at the teat of commerce. Those who need you playing the game of life their way. It’s kind of pathetic, isn’t it? That people like that exist. The more pathetic and pitiful you feel, the more you will be inclined to reach out toward those who have erected self-congratulating systems and accolades, in order to spend your precious time and money becoming like them. This is the biggest lie.
Success is what you say it is. If it’s having a roof over your head, then so be it. If it’s a few decent meals every day, then it is. If it’s having a yacht, then that’s success for you. But there is no general standard of success in humanity. Success is subjective because none of us have the same lives, genetic makeup, capabilities, financial support, community support— none of us, we are nothing alike, not a single one of us, yet, we are all connected.
What if success is being joyful and content in your life? What if success is being who you came here to be regardless of what society tries to steer you into being? What if success is doing the thing that makes you smile when you think about it? What if success is being with your favorite people? What if success is what gives you a sense of purpose, even if it doesn’t pay 6 figures?
Money? Money is what determines what and who is successful? Money can disappear in a flash. Peace of mind and joy are at your very core of your being. It is who you truly are on the inside. The very thing that animates your being, the spark of life within you. Your God-spark. THAT is where success is found. It is in whatever lights you up, what makes you feel good and purposeful— all societal measures aside. That right there, that is your success.
Blessings xx
